Somatic Sessions

Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) aims to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies. When we are stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze, SE helps us release, recover, and become more resilient. It is a body-oriented therapeutic model applied in multiple professions and professional settings—psychotherapy, medicine, coaching, teaching, and physical therapy—for healing trauma and other stress disorders.

Somatic Experiencing is a powerful modality that I utilize when working with single-event traumas (car accidents, falls, assaults, medical procedures, etc) and developmental or complex traumas (more prolonged issues often stemming from chronic stress or recurring traumas during childhood, while in utero or later in life). When working with any type of trauma, I strive to hold broader systemic and cultural perspectives.

An important part of my work involves helping clients develop an interoceptive (internal felt sense) connection to their bodies. With increasing interoceptive awareness, clients will often experience increasing capacity to listen to their body’s needs and increasing capacity for taking effective action in relation to those needs. Often, we will then see improved capacity for self-advocacy.

I have a special interest in working with medical and surgical traumas and pre- and peri-natal traumas. I have completed Peter Levine’s Eye of the Needle Training which focuses on working with near death experiences, anesthesia states and medical traumas. And, I have completed Peter Levine’s Depression, Aggression and Life Force Master Class. I have also received additional training in Relational Development Rupture and Repair: A Somatic Developmental Perspective and Concussions and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I have training in Trauma Center Trauma Senstive Yoga (TCTSY) and strive to incorporate the fundamental ideas of TCTSY into all aspects of my practice. In addition to individual SE sessions, I also offer opportunities for group learning and group experiencing.
